Thousands of Radiated Tortoises have been saved from trafficking, rehabilitated, and reintroduced into protected areas thanks to support from the AZA SAFE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AZA featured our work with the Radiated Tortoise in their most recent edition of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aza.org\/connect-stories\/stories\/celebrating-five-years-of-conservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Connect.<\/mark><\/a><\/strong> Our Radiated Tortoise program was an inaugural recipient of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/turtlesurvival.org\/news\/zoo-knoxville-and-turtle-survival-alliance-awarded-50000-grant-to-return-rescued-tortoises-to-the-wild-in-madagascar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">SAFE Granting program in 2019.<\/mark><\/a><\/strong> Since then, we\u2019ve achieved and surpassed numerous conservation goals with this critically endangered species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"791\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/turtlesurvival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Screenshot-2023-11-28-at-2.29.49-PM-791x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6079\" srcset=\"https:\/\/turtlesurvival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Screenshot-2023-11-28-at-2.29.49-PM-791x1024.png 791w, https:\/\/turtlesurvival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Screenshot-2023-11-28-at-2.29.49-PM-232x300.png 232w, https:\/\/turtlesurvival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Screenshot-2023-11-28-at-2.29.49-PM-768x994.png 768w, https:\/\/turtlesurvival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Screenshot-2023-11-28-at-2.29.49-PM-1187x1536.png 1187w, https:\/\/turtlesurvival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Screenshot-2023-11-28-at-2.29.49-PM.png 1372w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe 2019 SAFE radiated tortoise is dedicated to long-term impact and positive change. Radiated tortoises once had a population on the island of Madagascar estimated to be 12 million. Today, their population is likely below two million. The sharp decline results from habitat fragmentation, degradation, and poaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following significant confiscations in 2018, Turtle Survival Alliance was responsible for managing close to 26,000 radiated tortoises that had been confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade.
